Brad Hogg Believes RCB Has Taken A Gamble By Buying Glenn Maxwell

Brad Hogg believes RCB (Royal Challengers Bangalore) has taken a huge gamble by opting to buy Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell at an exorbitant amount.

Glenn Maxwell was released by the Punjab Kings, formerly Kings XI Punjab, ahead of the IPL 2021 Auction due to his indifferent performances last season at UAE. However, RCB acquired the maverick all-rounders’ services by paying a whopping ₹14.25 crore at the auction.

Brad Hogg Doesn’t Know The Reason For RCB For Buying Him As He Did Well In Only 2 IPLs Out Of 9 IPLs He Featured

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, former spinner Brad Hogg was asked by a fan the reason behind Glenn Maxwell getting such a large amount despite his below-average performances. Glenn Maxwell has been inconsistent in the past few seasons of IPL, and there were doubts that he will be amongst the most in-demand but the auction proved otherwise.

The right-handed batsman managed to amass only 108 runs in 13 games at a pathetic average of 15.43 with a strike rate of 101.89 and failed even to hit a single six in IPL 2020.

The former Australian spinner responded that he is also clueless and stated that RCB had taken a “huge risk” by picking him.

“I don’t know why RCB have gone for him because out of nine IPLs, he has only performed in two of them. This is a huge risk. You are on a prayer with him,” said Hogg.

Brad Hogg reckons RCB might be looking to promote South African star batsman AB de Villiers up the order to give him more time in the middle of the crease to get set and score vital runs.

“I am thinking they have got AB de Villiers who they used down in the lower-order last year to finish off the innings in some games. They don’t want that, they want him to bat higher up and try and use as many overs as possible,” observed Hogg.

Glenn Maxwell has been inconsistent in the past few seasons of IPL, and there were doubts that he will be amongst the most in-demand but the auction proved otherwise. Glenn Maxwell represented Kings XI Punjab in IPL 2020 and endured a forgettable edition after receiving a bid of INR 10.75 crores.

Brad Hogg : RCB Will Open With Virat Kohli And Devdutt Padikkal

Brad Hogg believes RCB is likely to play Virat Kohli and Devdutt Padikkal as openers, with AB de Villiers coming in at No.3. The 50-year-old spinner feels the presence of Virat Kohli and AB De Villiers might allow Glenn Maxwell to play more freely.

“I think they will open with Virat Kohli and Padikkal, AB de Villiers coming in at No.3 and Maxwell will come in around No.4 or No.5. I just think with that pressure taken off Maxwell, with the two legends of the game – Kohli and De Villiers – they think that he might stand up and deliver,” said Hogg.

Brad Hogg concluded by reiterating that Glenn Maxwell attracting such huge bids despite his insipid performances in the IPL is unfathomable.

“It’s yet to be seen but the money that Glenn Maxwell gets, it’s well over-priced for his performances but it’s not his fault. He is always putting his name in the auction and teams keep buying him,” Hogg concluded.

It will be interesting to see whether RCB decides to open with skipper Virat Kohli or use Josh Philippe instead. In either case, the Bangalore-based franchise would depend a lot on Glenn Maxwell, as their middle-order lacks experience. RCB has acquired the services of in-form Mohammed Azharudeen, Rajat Patidar, Daniel Sams, Sachin Baby, Daniel Christian, and Srikar Bharat as batsmen who haven’t much experience in IPL and international cricket.

Royal Challengers Bangalore splurged a whopping INR 29.25 crore on two overseas all-rounders in Glenn Maxwell and Kyle Jamieson during the IPL 2021 auction held in Chennai yesterday. Despite spending a maximum of INR 84.65 crore, Royal Challengers have the least number of players (22).
