Ahead of the ICC World Test Championship final, Australia star David Warner has announced his retirement plans. The left-handed batsman has said that he wishes to end his illustrious Test career in front of his home crowd in Sydney next year.
The left-handed batsman is currently gearing up for the ICC WTC Final against India, scheduled to be played from June 7 at The Oval in London. David Warner is also a part of the Australia squad that will take on England in the five-match Ashes, scheduled to begin from June 16.
And ahead of the two important Test assignments, the star opener has confirmed revealed his wish for next home season’s series against Pakistan to be his last in the Baggy Green. Speaking to reporters on Saturday (June 3), the southpaw said that he is hopeful of finishing his Test career at the Sydney Cricket Ground in January next year. He, however, wishes to continue playing for Australia in the limited-overs format until the 2024 T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.
“You’ve got to score runs. I’ve always said the (2024) World Cup would probably be my final game,” David Warner said on Saturday.
“I probably owe it to myself and my family – if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia – I can definitely say I won’t be playing that West Indies series.
“If I can get through this (WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series I will definitely finish up then,” he added.
David Warner on his future:
Speaking further on his future, David Warner said that he wishes to be a part of the Australian team for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He revealed his plans to stay in contention and in good form ahead of the World Cup as he looks to end his illustrious career on a high.
“I want to play that 2024 World Cup. It is something that is on the back of my mind. We’ve got a lot of cricket before that, and then I think it stops from February,” said Warner.
“So for me, then I’ll have to play IPL some of the other franchise leagues and then get into that rhythm to play in June.
“There will be a bit of cricket around to play. Who knows I might go back and play a Shield game for New South Wales,” he added.
David Warner is one of the most decorated openers in the history of Australian cricket. He has been a key member of the Australia team across formats for more than a decade now. The star batsman starred with the bat when Australia won the 50-over World Cup in 2015 and the T20 World Cup in 2021.
