Breaking: Former Sri Lankan keeper appointed as USA coach

A Former Sri Lankan wicket-keeper Pubudu Dassanayake has been appointed as the coach of USA cricket team by ICC Americas. The regional cricket body has also appointed Eric Parthen as the project manager in an attempt to grow the sport in the region.

Pubudu Dassanayake played for Sri Lanka in the early 90s when he made debut for them in 1993. However, he could play only for one year as he went out of the national team in 1994. He managed to represent the island nation in 11 Test match and 16 ODIs over that period.

However, he then moved on to Canada and managed to represent Canada national team in 2005 and 2006 as he helped immensely in the growth of cricket in the nation. He then retired as a player and took up a coaching role in Canada national team.

The 46-year old has held the role till 2011 before moving to Nepal where he replaced his fellow countryman Roy Dias and coached the side till 2015. He managed to help Nepal qualify for their first major ICC tournament, T20 World Cup 2014 as they managed to beat Hong Kong and Afghanistan in the process.

Dassanayake said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to coach the USA, especially at what is an exciting time for USA cricket. I believe there is a great deal of talent here; it will just require hard work from everyone involved to get the best out of these players and hopefully see US cricket progress to higher honours”.

New project manager Eric Parthen, who has previously held important roles in Boxing and Taekwondo, said:  “I am thrilled to be joining ICC Americas at such a pivotal point in its history. My focus will be on working with the whole cricket family here in the US and creating a sustainable structure to allow cricket to flourish at all levels”.
