Gautam Gambhir has been called as a replacement for KL Rahul as the latter was injured during the first test against New Zealand.
The 34-year old has been piling up runs consistently in domestic cricket over the past few weeks and questions have been raised when he was not selected for the test series when the squad was announced earlier.
However, new coach Anil Kumble has expressed his interest in bringing the player to the test team as his rich experience and current form will have a huge difference for the team as they are set to take on New Zealand in the 250th home test match at Eden Gardens from 30th September.
The southpaw has undergone few fitness tests earlier and has passed all of them as he looks to open the batting for India at Eden Gardens. Meanwhile, Jayant Yadav has also been called as Ishant Sharma is ruled out of the second test as he is yet to recover completely from the fever.
Jayant Yadav has had an excellent IPL with Delhi Daredevils as he is an excellent allrounder to add to the roster. The 26-year old has been performing consistently in the domestic circuit over the last one year and has been deservedly called up for the national side.
The player can bat and can bowl effective off-spin which could be crucial in the Eden Gardens as the venue is known for its assistance to the spinners over the ages. The move could also be considered as a back up to Ravichandran Ashwin as the 30-year old is still recovering from the corn that he had on his middle finger.
However, it should be seen whether Kumble would be opting to go with three spinners at Eden gardens as the slow bowlers will hold the key at the iconic ground no matter the format.
