CA XI v India 2018, Practice Game, Day 3, SCG – Day Review

Openers Darcy Short and Max Bryant ensured that the visitors took notice of their credentials going into the Test series. Left-hand batsman Short hit a total of 11 boundaries while New South Wales-born Bryant hit a couple less. It took India 14 overs on Day 3 to bag the first wicket. Spinner Ravi Ashwin dismissed Bryant and Short was next to go.

The seam attack was tested but what tested the visitors even more was the panic that ran through early morning. In-form batsman Prithvi Shaw suffered a freakish ankle injury as he attempted to catch a ball, standing very close to the ropes. He went over on his ankle as the youngster tried to keep himself in play. The 19-year-old was down on the ground in pain until the team physio and few men had to carry him off the field.

Blow for India as Shaw gets ruled out

He returned on crutches while the Aussie batters were sending the bowlers for leather hunt. Later, he was ruled out of the first Test due to the injury. The game kept moving and the hosts carried on milking the Indian attack. Harry Nielsen scored a fifty and remained unbeaten at stumps. He was well supported by Aaron Hardie; who is having a great outing. Just weeks away from his 20th birthday, Hardie presented himself with four crucial wickets and came back to score a polished half-century with the bat.

Missed opportunities and footy skills on show

The batters had a bit of luck on their side as Rishabh Pant and Cheteshwar Pujara failed to hold on to the chances resulting in humiliation of sorts. Hardie walked back to the pavilion, not out on 68. Pacer Mohammed Shami scalped three wickets. On the other hand, Umesh Yadav spent most of the day bowling short balls. Ashwin can blame his colleagues for the ordinary show but he ended the day as the most economical bowler, conceding 63 runs in his 24 overs. Skipper Kohli too rolled his arms but for him the highlight of the day would be the footy skills he had on display.

India will have to do much more than just the odd chirping if they are to take 20 wickets in the coming games. For now, they will look to wrap up the rookies in order to take some confidence under their belt ahead of the Adelaide Test.

Brief Scores:

India: 358 ( Shaw 66, Kohli 64; Hardie 4/50)

CA XI: 356/6 (Short 74, Hardie 68; Shami 3/67)
