CAC May Consider Ravi Shastri For The Top Job, Says Member Of The COA
The Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrator has indicated that the Ravi Shastri, the former team director, can enter the race to become the next Head Coach, if the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) comprising of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman consider Shastri for the post.
Anil Kumble’s resignation, a controversial one as far as current developments are concerned, has made it clear that India will have a new head coach.
Shastri has bright chances as it is no secret that Kohli wants Shastri as the chief coach. But, as of now, the 55 year old who lost the race to Kumble last year, isn’t among the probable list as he hasn’t submitted his application.
The CAC can get him in the fray even without an application as it has the authority to request the BCCI to allow the interview of candidates if they feel they are quitable for the position. This can be done through a special request.
However, if the CAC decides to stick with the rules, then Shastri won’t be welcomed automatically. Speaking to Cricketnext, a member of the COA said that there is a clause which allows such special request.
“It is not something new or unheard of. It happens not only in big corporates, but also in top government positions wherein people from the outside are also interviewed in certain cases. At the end of the day, it is for the CAC to decide what is best for Indian cricket and if they feel the man who can do the job is Shastri, then why not,” the official explained.
But the COA is also clear that skipper Kohli must ensure that a repeat of the present episode doesn’t happen.
“While the team is led by the skipper, Kohli must also be told that such a scenario doesn’t augur well for Indian cricket and should be avoided in the future. The CAC has already spoken to him in Kumble’s case and we are confident that he will be spoken to again so that a similar situation doesn’t arise in the future. It is a case of two brilliant individuals not being able to work together and the dynamics of the team going for a toss,” the official explained.
It has been already being reported that Kohli spoke with both Tendulkar and Laxman before leaving for England on 23rd May and had urged them to bring in Shastri.
As of now, outspoken former cricketer Virender Sehwag is the front runner for the job along with Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Afghanistan coach Lalchand Rajput and Dodda Ganesh.
All these names are set to be interviewed by the CAC trio of VVS Laxman, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar.
It also said that the former Australia pacer Craig McDermott had also shown keenness. Apparently, he applied for the role but BCCI won’t be considering as his application arrived after the deadline.
