Can the Caribbean tour spell the end of the BCCI era and the start of the ‘Team India’ era?

In little over 24-hours, Team India will start a new chapter in their history book when they take on West Indies at North Sound on Thursday.

It marks the start of a new era in Indian cricket as legendary bowler Anil Kumble will lead the side into the game for the first time as the coach of the side.

It is exciting times for Team India as they are scheduled to play New Zealand and England in India after the tour to the Caribbean and Kumble’s tenure of one-year will over in a jiffy even before we can judge him.

So on the eve of his first match as a coach, let’s take a look at why this season can be termed as the rebirth of Indian cricket.

Over the years, the BCCI, the governing body of the sport in India has had too much of influence on the happening inside the team. There have been more than one occasions where the coach or the manager of the side has been involved in altercations with the board and it has never helped the image of the cricket side.

Though the BCCI is still the strongest and of course the richest cricket board in the world, it is still a long way from being the best board in the world.

‘Corruption’, the biggest enemy of sport found its way into the BCCI and has had its impact on the board since the turn of the century. Though the officials came up with many plans to make the board transparent, the controversies seemed to be never ending.

It had its effect on the Men in Blue on the field as more often than not, their victories were overshadowed by the happenings inside the board.

But for the first time in a long time, Team India will be playing a test series and all that will be spoken about is the 15-man squad taking the field and Anil Kumble the coach. No BCCI executive now have any say on the composition of the team or the methods they use and it is completely up to the new coach and the captain to make sure that the team comes back to India with their heads held high.

India have not lost a series to West Indies in 14-years and they will want to keep up the record in this upcoming series. The squad sent to the tour consists of players who deserve to be in the test team and surely, they are the 15-players Kumble and Kohli wanted in the West Indies.

For the first time, India is involved in a series with this much of transparency and for the first time, a victory in the series will be credited completely to the players.

It is good to see that Team India is now a different body to the BCCI and if this can be followed for years to come, this series may well mark the end of the BCCI era and start the era of ‘Team India’.

Let’s hope that the change helps India set new records and reach greater heights in years to come.
