Can We Host Pakistan U-19 Side? BCCI Asks Indian Government

The Board of control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has written to the Home Ministry of Government of India, seeking a permission to let Pakistan participate in the U-19 Asia Cup, which is scheduled to be played in India at the end of this year. Due to unfavourable ties between the two countries, both the teams are yet to play a bilateral series from past four and a half years and hosting Pakistan seeks a permission from Government of India,

“The BCCI has written to the Indian government seeking permission for whether we can host the Youth Asia Cup for under-19 boys. In normal circumstances, we wouldn’t be too worried about getting the clearance but since the tournament would include a team from Pakistan an approval is being sought. The government’s stance so far has been that India cannot play Pakistan in a bilateral series but there’s no clarity on whether they could face each other in a multinational event like this,” a BCCI official told The Indian Express.

Last year, Pakistan travelled to India for T20 World Cup in the month of March/April. Though they arrived in the country after getting security clearance from the Indian government. The controversy erupted when the venue of the clash between the two countries was shifted from Dharamsala to Kolkata, after political issues.

The Indian sports Minister Vijay Goel, ahead of ICC Champions Trophy, had clearly stated that the Indian team will not play any bilateral series against Pakistan and now it will be a matter to see whether BCCI gets a permission to invite Pakistan for a multilateral tournament.

The last edition of  U-19 Asia cup was played in Sri Lanka in the month of December, which the Indian team won by defeating Sri Lanka in the final. Himanshu Rana emerged as the highest run-scorer in the tournament with 283 runs in his account.

Currently, the junior team is in England for a full fledged series. The visitors have had already won the Test series by a margin of 2-0. The five match junior One-day series starts from August 7. Prithvi Shaw will lead the team for the one-day series, taking over the captaincy from former captain Abhishek Sharma.
