A Canadian cricketer was among four who were arrested at Delhi Airport on Saturday. He was among four people who got arrested due to gold smuggling. The officials have confirmed the news on Tuesday.
It is believed that the cricketer was trying to smuggle gold worth 1.7 crore INR. However, the officials at the airport were able to intercept them. All four were travelling from Bangkok and upon their arrival were Customs Department sleuths at the Delhi airport.
After thorough inspection on their personal luggage, the officers were able to trace 5.2 kg of gold. There are five pieces of gold. The recovered gold has a monetary value of 1.7 crore INR.
The customs department in Delhi issued a statement on the incident on Tuesday. Meanwhile, all four accused are relatives. Two of them are male while the other two were female.
They went to Bangkok on Wednesday and returned back on Saturday. The customs department has confirmed they went on a combined ticket booked by one of the passengers, identified as Rakesh Luthra.
One of the accused is a Canada cricketer. He has represented Canada in the ICC under-19 World Cup held in Bangladesh. This was confirmed by the officials. Although, the identity of the cricketer is not revealed.
The accused tried for a bail after being produced in front of a magistrate. However, the Magistrate refused their bail and sent them to judicial custody, the officials said. Meanwhile, the customs department did a brilliant job in finding illegally smuggled gold in this incident.
