Team India’s Champions Trophy’s Future To Be Decided In BCCI SGM On May 7

To discuss the announcements made in the ICC’s meet and to decide India’s participation in Champions Trophy 2017, The Board of Control for Cricket in India will hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) on May 7. The largest board in cricketing circle suffered few jitters when other member countries outvoted BCCI and asked for a change in the working of ICC. Along with that, other board also voted for a change in the financial structure which resulted in lowering down of the BCCI’s share.

It clearly means that BCCI, who had earlier skipped previous cutoff date of announcing the squad for Champions Trophy, will defer the announcement of squad till May 7.

In the latest news, it has been learnt that ICC is ready to pay $390m to BCCI but the India board is firm on $450m as the Indian board is confident that the sponsorship will be affected if they withdraw from the tournament,

“At this point, pull-out is an option. The middle path is if they are ready to go up to $450 million since they were initially ready to pay $390. Also, no change in governance structure. Will Star Sports give them the same deal that they would give if Virat Kohli vs Mohammed Amir or Mitchell Starc vs MS Dhoni contest doesn’t take place?” an official told PTI.

Meanwhile, the Indian players have also asked COA to clear whether they are going to England to participate in the tournament or not,

“A number of Indian cricketers are ringing us up to ask, ‘Are we going or not?’ Why do we need to put them in such a situation. Indian cricket is doing very well on the field. We need to showcase them not (boycott). If we don’t go what will the players do in June? Let’s not get them demoralised,” a CoA member said.

Champions Trophy 2017 will kick off on June 1. The defending Champions is due to take on Pakistan in their first league stage game on June 4. However, looking at the current situation, chances of Indian team taking part in the league looks dim and bleak.
