Chances of teams to enter Quarter Finals of ICC World Cup 2015
With almost half of the Cricket World Cup League matches are finished, we are now in a position to judge the teams that may qualify for the Quarter-finals. Some expected match results have ensured that the big guns like India, Australia and New Zealand are almost through to the Quarters.
And some upsets have created problems for teams like Pakistan and England in their respective groups. We are going to analyze each teams here and see their probability to enter the next round. Also we will analyze all upcoming match results to produce a virtual list of teams that may face each other in the Quarter finals.
Group A –
New Zealand are surely through to the quarters and also one of the favorites to win the World Cup. Probably they are going to win all the league matches after their win against Australia. They are possibly going to finish first in the points table with 12 points.
Prediction – Win v/s Afghanistan, Win v/s Bangladesh.
After their defeat against New Zealand, Australia are expected to win all the remaining league matches. They also lost a point to Bangladesh in a rain washed encounter which could alter the lower part of the Points table but the Aussies will still be able to finish 2nd in the table
Prediction – Win v/s Afghanistan, Win v/s Sri Lanka, Win v/s Scotland.
Weakest among the top guns in Group-A England need to show their ability against teams like Afghanistan and Bangladesh. After losing their first two matches they managed to secure a win against Scotland, but they need to tie up their boots to ensure a quarter final berth.
They will probably finish 3rd in their Group with 8 points
Prediction – Win v/s Sri Lanka, Win v/s Bangladesh, Win v/s Afghanistan.
Sri Lanka –
The dark horses of this World Cup, Sri Lanka is looking bit scratchy in their current form but they are expected to pull all the unexpected results and finish the table at third position. After a dismal start against the Kiwis they managed to win both their matches against the lesser teams. The upcoming matches will decide what would be their position.
They might finish 4th in the Group with 6 points.
Prediction – Loss v/s England, Loss v/s Australia, Win v/s Scotland
They are said to win the hearts but they struggle to win matches. Bangladesh was lucky to get a Point against Australia in a rain washed encounter which will be a big factor for them to qualify for the Quarters still they need to beat a big team to ensure their quarter final berth. A win against England or New Zealand will be sufficient to qualify.
Prediction – Win vs Scotland, Loss vs England, Loss vs New Zealand.
Have the ability to beat a big team on their day. They showed their class against Scotland and will be aiming to give a tough fight against the English team. The match against England will decide the fate of the Afghans.
Prediction – Loss vs New Zealand, Loss vs Australia, Loss vs England
They are still considered as minnows but would not be easy to beat them. Only a miracle can help them to qualify for the quarters. Virtually they are out of the world cup 2015 and will play for pride. The match against Bangladesh will be their only chance to win.
Prediction- Loss vs Bangladesh, Loss vs Australia, Loss vs New Zealand.
Group B –
The defending champions were out of form before the World Cup but they showed their strength in their first three matches which was relatively their strongest match in the group stage. They will probably beat rest of the teams in the group and will emerge as group topper with an all-win record.
Prediction- Win v/s Zimbabwe, Win v/s West Indies, Win v/s Ireland
South Africa –
Thought to be the strongest team in the group but their defeat against India proved they are not the invincible even with the likes of AB de Villiers, Amla and even Dale Steyn. They are surely going to be second in the group after a superb performance against the West Indies. They are expected to thrash the opponents in upcoming matches.
Prediction – Win v/s West Indies, Win v/s Ireland, Win v/s Pakistan.
West Indies –
One of the most unpredictable teams of the World Cup, they boast on the power of Gayle, Russell and Smith. After Gayle’s 215 against the Zimbabweans, West Indies showed they can hit any attack out of the park on their day.
They have 4 points as of now and their own other win might come against UAE getting them to 6 points.
Prediction – Loss v/s South Africa, Loss v/s India, Win v/s UAE
Presently out form, low in Morale and winless in 2015, Pakistan is expected to bounce back against the weaker teams. The match between Pakistan and Ireland will be eye catcher and will probably decide the fate of the group as Pakistan winning all their 3 matches could finish them with 6 points too.
Prediction – Win v/s Zimbabwe, Win v/s Ireland, Win v/s UAE
The biggest surprise that we could see in this World Cup could be the qualification of Ireland through to the Quarter-finals. They already beat West Indies in their World Cup opener and eyeing to repeat the 2007 WC performance against Pakistan. The Irish team has won both their matches and one more win will ensure qualification from this group.
However a win against Zimbabwe and a loss in the remaining matches will leave them with 6 points too.
Prediction- Loss v/s South Africa, Win v/s Zimbabwe, Loss v/s India, Loss v/s Pakistan
The giant killers among the minnows, they have shown their ability with the bat but their bowling department has put them down. Zimbabwe registered their first win against UAE and aim to give a tough fight to Ireland and Pakistan. If they managed to win both these matches they are definitely going to the quarters but there if quality on paper should prevail it might not be the best outcome for the Zimbabwe side.
Prediction- Loss vs India, Loss vs Ireland, Loss vs Pakistan
They are a spirited team and have just made a mark in international level. This World Cup, they may not win any matches but they are here to gain experience and show their never say die attitude. They are expected to lose their remaining matches which are relatively tougher than the first two matches which they already lost.
Prediction- Loss Vs India, Loss vs Pakistan, Loss vs South Africa, Loss vs West Indies.
All in all, Group-A is a simpler group as per qualification as New Zealand, Australia, England and Sri Lanka will qualify through to the quarter-finals and the final group match between Pakistan and Ireland will decide who will go through from Group-B. There is also a possibility that 3 teams (West Indies, Pakistan and Ireland) could all be joint on 6 points at the end of the league matches. It would then come down to the net-run rates of the respective teams and that will decide who makes it to the quarter-finals.
Probable Quarter Final Fixtures –
Australia vs. Ireland
New Zealand vs. Pakistan
Sri Lanka vs. South Africa
England vs. India
