Chennai Super Kings prepared their squad according to conditions in Chennai but they have to adapt to the conditions to UAE as IPL was shifted to UAE due to rising coronavirus cases. Their batting coach Michael Hussey too admits that the franchise misses the slow and turning track which suits their skipper MS Dhoni’s game-plans as Chennai Super Kings had a fortress in Chepauk stadium which assists spinners and medium pacers.
But with IPL 2020 being moved abroad, fast pacers are performing far better than spinners and so Mumbai and Delhi are at the top in the points table. Delhi Capitals has pacer Kagiso Rabada in their ranks who is leading wicket-taker with 12 wickets in IPL 2020.
Mumbai Indians has yorker specialist Jasprit Bumrah in their ranks along with James Pattinson and Trent Boult. The three MI players occupy 2nd,3rd and 4th place in the maximum wicket-takers list with 11,10 and 9 wickets.
Chennai Super Kings Was Based Playing In Chennai Where Spinners Have Been Effective: Michael Hussey
Chennai Super Kings management is also to blame as CSK suffered a shock defeat to KKR after looking poised for a win. The non-inclusion of Imran Tahir and persisting with out of form Kedar Jadhav have been criticized.
Karn Sharma performed well in his first match against KKR where he picked two wickets conceding 25 runs. Piyush Chawla has leaked a lot of runs but picked up six wickets in five matches while Ravindra Jadeja has the only three wicket to his name in six games averaging 57.33.
“Yeah, certainly our team was based around playing in Chennai. Obviously, the spinners have been very effective there in the past but we will have to adapt and we have done it before,” Michael Hussey said.
“Couple of seasons ago we had to move out of Chennai and had to play our home games in Pune and the team adapted really well to that. I think we are lucky because we go for experienced players generally and these players know their game really well and know how to react to different situations and different conditions. Fingers crossed we can adapt and also play a very good brand of cricket,” he added.
Wickets in UAE too slow down a bit which was evident as both KKR and CSK found it difficult to score runs in the latter half of the innings. CSK squandered an opportunity to win as they could score 157/5 in reply to KKR’s 167. They could only score 58 runs in the last eight overs.
Chennai Super Kings’ Imran Tahir Yet To Feature In IPL 2020 Despite Being Leading Wicket Taker In IPL 2019
Last year in 2019, Imran Tahir won the purple cap by being leading wicket-taker as he picked 26 wickets but is yet to feature in a single game in IPL 2020. CSK picked pacers Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Sam Curran and Dwayne Bravo more often in starting XI. He picked 26 wickets in 17 matches and finished ahead of Kagiso Rabada who had 25 from 12 matches.
Left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner right arm spinner Imran Tahir has not been utilized which is quite shocking as the four overseas players consisted of Faf Du Plessis, Shane Watson, Sam Curran and Dwayne Bravo. The latter though was injured in the first few games where pacers Lungi Ngidi and Josh Hazlewood were given chances.
In January 2018, Chennai Super Kings appointed Michael Hussey as their batting coach.
