Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals To Play IPL Next Year, Confirms Rahul Johri

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) CEO Rahul Johri has confirmed that defunct IPL franchises Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are set to make a comeback to the cash-rich league next season.

Both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are currently serving their two-year ban due to the betting allegations that have seen the apex court barred the two franchises from participating.

However, the return of Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will see two new franchises Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions exit the league next season as Johri has revealed that the board are not keen to have 10 teams in Indian Premier League which will impact the schedule.

IPL 2018 will see all the six franchises apart from the new teams as well as Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals which are one of the founding franchises in league history.

According to a report in Dainik Jagran, Johri stated,

“The ban on Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will be lifted next year. Therefore, both teams will return in the next edition of the IPL. The BCCI is in no mood to increase the number of teams in the IPL.

“Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals will replace Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions in the next edition of the IPL. To increase the popularity of IPL in small towns and cities, fan parks will be created in such areas. Every match of the IPL is viewed by 20 lakhs people online.”

The return of both the old franchises brings a lot of positivity from the fans, as the teams have developed an excellent and loyal fan base over the country during their first eight seasons in the Indian Premier League.

However, it remains to be seen how the board will progress and with player retention and auction for the next season, as the next year will see the sides complete their 10 years of the initial contract for their respective franchise.
