During his record 300th ODI, Chris Gayle became the most ODI run-scorer both for Windies and as a Caribbean batsman.

The host Windies met with India in the second ODI of the three-match series at Port of Spain on Sunday (11th August). It was the 300th ODI for Chris Gayle as he became the first Caribbean cricketer to play 300 ODIs (297 ODIs for Windies and three ODIs for ICC World XI). The Caribbean legend Brian Lara was the previous most-capped ODI player as a Caribbean cricketer as he played 299 ODIs (295 ODIs for West Indies and four ODIs for ICC World XI).

In this record-breaking match, Gayle became the most ODI run-scorer for Windies. Soon in the same game, he also became the most overall ODI run-scorer as a Caribbean batsman.

Chris Gayle broke Brian Lara’s records

The 39-year-old left-handed Caribbean batsman Gayle scored 11 runs off 24 balls (one four). Adding this small knock, Gayle has scored 10,353 ODI runs for Windies while he has also scored 10,408 runs in overall ODI career. In both these cases, Gayle broke the records of Brian Lara.

The left-handed batsman Lara scored 10,348 ODI runs for Windies. Meanwhile, Lara also scored 10,405 runs in his overall ODI career.

After playing 300 ODIs, Gayle has scored 10,408 runs with an average of 37.71. After breaking Brian Lara’s overall ODI runs record, Gayle is now the 12th most run-scorer in ODI cricket history. Besides this, Gayle is now also the fourth most ODI run-scorer as a left-handed batsman.

India managed 279/7, thanks to Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer

Coming back to this game, Indian captain Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. Kohli played a captain’s knock as he scored his 42nd ODI century. The right-handed batsman scored 120 runs off 125 balls with 14 fours and only six.

The no.5 batsman Shreyas Iyer also played a crucial knock of 71 runs off 68 balls (five fours and only six). These two big scores helped the visitors to manage the first innings total of 279/7 (50 overs).

Among the Caribbean bowlers, only Carlos Brathwaite managed to pick up more than one wicket. He had the bowling figures of 10-0-53-3.

Chris Gayle and Evin Lewis had a 45-run opening partnership before Gayle lost his wicket. After scoring 11 runs, Gayle was trapped for lbw by the Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Even, the review failed to save Gayle.
