Chris Gayle snatched his 12th ton in Caribbean Premiere League which brought him the record of most T20 century by any batsman. At the launch of the Caribbean Premier League he was announced as the first franchise player for the league. He is playing for Jamaica Tallawahs, the defending champion of Caribbean Premiere League 2013. This barbarian played a deadly innings of 111 runs off 63 balls, which helped Jamaica Tallawahs headstart their campaign in the Caribbean Premier League 2 with a seven-wicket win over St Lucia Zouks at the National Cricket Stadium in St. George’s, Grenada on 11th July, 2014. He loves to carve through the covers off either foot, and has the ability to decimate the figures of even the thriftiest of opening bowlers.
Gayle set the first record for the highest innings in a Twenty20 International, scoring 117 against South Africa in the first match of the 2007 World Twenty20. He is known for his characteristic hitting, imposing physique, and timing. Gayle played total 174 T20 matches for 13 teams with the strike rate of 148.14 in his career.
Gayle’s carefree mien was on display as he arrived at the crease sporting sunglasses underneath his helmet in the CPL match between Jamaica Tallawahs and St Lucia Zouks. Getting the highest total of the opening weekend to that point was nowhere near enough in the end for the St Lucia Zouks as Gayle launched his 10 sixes and five fours to all parts of the ground. Gayle brought up his 50 runs off 30 balls in the ninth over by crushing left-arm spinner Roelof van der Merwe. He was equally destructive against Darren Sammy. He began the 19th over on 99, having added another half-century stand with Adam Voges, and brought up the first century in the CPL with a single. After watching his performance St Lucia Zouks skipper Darren Sammy said that presence of Gayle was always going to take the game away from them. Initially they thought 160 run was a good total to win the match but Chris performed well, added Darren Sammy. Mickey Arthur, the coach of Jamaica Tallawahs was feeling blessed having Gayle on his team.
Gayle said that he played on a solid base which was created by Chadwick Walton. He gave the momentum initially scoring 23 runs off 12 balls.
In the recently concluded 2014 IPL, he could not perform as he missed five of RCB’s matches because of an injury and aggregated only 196 runs in nine games, but he proved again that ‘Sleeping Dragon’ can wake up any time. He was not totally fit for this match as he was having back pain and played with painkillers though he played well and made a record too. Let’s see his 12 T20 centuries.
