Chris Silverwood to Join England as Bowling Coach after Ashes 2017-18

Former England Test cricketer Chris Silverwood is bound to take care of the fast bowling department as he would be joining the England team in January 2018, soon after the Ashes campaign, according to the British media reports.

The 42-year-old Pontefract-born Silverwood has served English County side Essex as a head coach after representing Yorkshire and Middlesex.

According to reports, Silverwood will join Three Lions as a full-time coach in a limited-overs series after England Cricket Board (ECB) has convinced him of the top-brass role.

Pertinently, the development took place after England bowling Coach Ottis Gibson agreed to be the chief coach of South Africa before Windies tour to England.

The former Windies bowler Gibson was eventually the assistant of England chief coach Trevor Bayliss since 2015, as former succeeded Russell Domingo in August, this year as a head coach of the Proteas.

Instrumental Silverwood became the major attraction as Essex under his tutelage lift the much-awaited title in September (2017) since 1992 when Ryan ten Doeschate led side beat Lancashire at Somerset.

However, it’s pertinent to point out the Joe Root-led side have availed the services of former New Zealand paceman Shane Bond as a bowling consultant for the first two Tests which subsequently rules out the involvement of Silverwood during the series Down Under.

In 2015, after joining Essex, Silverwood played an imperative role which eventually helped the side when they were promoted in 2016 from the Division Two, and it would be an interesting choice the Board has opted for.

On the other side, Silverwood is all set to nurse the England Lions following the accord with the Board, as former England batting all-rounder Paul Collingwood would lend a hand to the visitors’ bowlers for next three Tests on Australian soil.

The England Lions are bound to travel to Australia in November as a part of his commitment.

Silverwood bagged 17 international scalps for England after playing seven One-day internationals and six Tests between 1996 and 2002.

In the broader perspective, Silverwood has dominated the first-class competition in which he claimed 577 wickets at an average of 27.41. He played 184 four-day innings to send down 29,917 deliveries as he went on to concede 15,819 runs.

Silverwood, who has also played 202 List A fixtures and 20 Twenty20 matches had also enjoyed as a player-cum-coach for Zimbabwe-based Mashonaland Eagle back in 2009.
