Young and promising wicket-keeper from Hong Kong, Christopher Carter has announced premature retirement from all forms of cricket.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old decided it was the right time bid farewell and pursue his ambition of becoming a pilot. Carter played 11 One-Day Internationals and 10 T20Is for Hong Kong, having made his ODI debut in 2015. He was also part of the Hong Kong squad in the recently-concluded Asia Cup and the qualifiers before that.

Speaking on the development, Christopher Carter admitted putting his studies on hold for long. However, now he feels this is the right time to make a shift.

I already put my studies on hold before but I think it’s time to do what I’ve always wanted to do, and that is to become a pilot,” Carter told the South China Morning Post.

Citing the reason, the young cricketer reasoned limited opportunities and a shortage of funding in the country for the sport are the primary causes.

It is difficult to be a cricketer in Hong Kong given the lack of funding. People within CHK [Cricket Hong Kong] work so hard to try and allow us to play on a full-time basis,” admitted Christopher Carter.

Furthermore, he also talked about the lack of support from government and ICC required to develop the game.

“The likes of Mark Wright [Director of cricket] and Simon Cook [Head coach] really do their best, but they are not supported well enough by the government or the ICC,” he signed off.

Christopher Carter will now travel to Australia to train as a pilot for a commercial airline.
