Contrasting Comments From MSK Prasad & Ravi Shastri Over Yuvraj Singh’s Ouster Suggests Batsman’s Career Is Nearing End

Speculations were rife that Yuvraj Singh’s international career had taken a big blow when he got dropped from the squad for the ongoing series in Sri Lanka. The southpaw, who had returned to the ODI team earlier this year after a three-year gap, hit the ground running and had slammed a career-best 150 against England in only his second comeback match. However, since then he failed to churn out consistent performances, and the axing for the Sri Lanka series made one and all believe that time has run out for the World Cup-winning star.

But just a day after the squad was announced, chief selector MSK Prasad quashed the speculations and clarified that national team’s door is still open for the senior cricketer by stating that the 36-year was rested not dropped.

“Yuvraj has been rested,” Prasad had said. “Doors are never closed on anybody. Everybody has got a right to play cricket. It’s their passion. They are chasing their passion. In terms of selection, we try to select the best possible team.”

Well, it seems the comments from Prasad were just made to douse the fire that broke after the senior batsman was surprisingly omitted as head coach Ravi Shastri’s contrasting comments has once again surfaced speculations that Yuvraj’s career is nearing the end. One should remember that there was some news that suggested that Yuvraj along with Suresh Raina failed to make it to the squad after failing the ‘Yo Yo’ endurance test and although sources dismissed the reports, later on, Shastri’s recent comments has raised some eyebrows.

The head coach recently admitted that the duo was dropped as the team is looking to be the ‘best fielding side on the park.’

“We want the best fielding side on the park. That’s it. So how do you become the best fielding side on the park? Fitness. And that’s why there have been parameters set,” Shastri had said: “My job is not to get involved in selection ever because I want my players to trust me. That’s the job of selectors. They watch more cricket and they see it the year around. If anyone fits into their parameters, depending on their form, then on the cricket field, they are available for selection.”

“Yes. When there are parameters put in place and that’s the vision of the team, then everyone has to fit into those parameters. It is as simple as that,” Shastri had replied when asked whether fitness was reason behind Yuvraj’s ouster.

Well, the contradictory statement from the chief selector and the head coach is a big hint that not everything is fine as far as Yuvraj’s place in the team is concerned. The southpaw has looked like a pale shadow of his former self in recent times and considering that the team is experimenting extensively with the likes of Manish Pandey, KL Rahul and Kedar Jadhav in the middle-order, it is quite clear that the team-management is looking beyond Yuvraj. Moreover, with the Punjab star being ignored for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, one can speculate that he does not feature very prominently in the national team’s scheme of things.
