CPL 2017: Kieron Pollard Slammed for Bowling Deliberate No-Ball
Windies star Kieron Pollard has faced the wrath of cricket community after his unsporting conduct during the Caribbean Premier League game denied Evin Lewis a deserved century.
Evin Lewis’ stunning knock against Barbados Tridents was soured by a controversy over Kieron Pollard’s controversial no-ball, which proved to be the winning run and left the St Kitts and Nevis opener stranded on 97.
Chasing a modest 129, Lewis fired on all the cylinders and had raced away to 97 off just 32 balls with the scoreboard reading an unbelievable 128 for 0 after seven overs and what could have been an incredible milestone turned out to be a controversial one.
With just one run needed, Tridents skipper Pollard took the ball and deliberately overstepped and bowled a short ball above the batsman’s head. Lewis could not do much except letting the ball go, as the match ended on a disappointing note both for the batsman as well as the cricket community.
Former New Zealand cricket and commentator Danny Morrison also criticised Pollard, calling the incident a disappointing one.
“(Lewis’ innings) deserved a hundred and I’ve got to say, as positive and excited as I am, it’s a pretty disappointing way for Pollard to finish the game,” Morrison said.
Lewis also admitted that it was disappointing to miss out on the century but sounded delighted with his stunning effort. The left-handed batsman outshone his illustrious partner Chris Gayle who faced just 14 balls, as Lewis was wreaking havoc from the other end. His brutal knock was studded with 11 sixes and six fours, as the Patriots became the first team to reach triple figures during the power play in the tournament’s history when they scored 105 from the first six overs.
“It hurts (missing out on the hundred), but hitting 97 not out off 33 balls? I’ll take that any day,” he said after receiving the Man of the Match award. “I’ve been hitting the ball long and hard in the nets. I’m confident now and looking forward to the playoffs.”
