CPLT20: N Pooran stars as Trident beat the Zouks by 25 runs
N Pooran: 81 (39b 9*4, 4*6); AB de Villiers: 32 (22b 3*4, 1*6)
J Taylor: 2/27; S Shillingford: 1/28
A Fletcher: 20 (13b 2*4; 1*6); D Sammy: 18 (14b 2*4, 1*6)
R Rampaul: 2/22; W Parnell: 2/27
The Barbados Trident have not been able to maintain consistency in their result this season but came up with a good performance to get the better of the St Lucia Zouks in the 18th match of the current edition of the Caribbean Premier League.
Darren Sammy decided to field first after winning the toss but would not have been happy with the way his bowlers performed on the night. Though they got Shoaib Malik early in the game, K Hope, AB de Villiers and N Pooran made sure that the Tridents end up with a decent target on the board.
Hope scored a measure d28 of 28 while AB de Villiers looked dashing for his 32 of 22 but the stand out performer was N Pooran who smashed 81 of just 39 balls with 9 fours and 4 sixes.
Shane Watson was a bit expensive on the night as he went for 37 runs in his four overs but a target of 174 was something that was not out of reach for the Zouks.
However, they had a very poor start to their chase losing J Charles and Shane Watson quickly leaving the Zouks reeling at 33/ after the end of the 5th over.
D Fletcher went two overs later and though D Miller and M Hussey tried to stitch a partnership, the required run rate was always climbing. The Zouks needed an explosive start and a sensible middle period but they were not able to build on any start given by their openers and continued to lose cheap wickets an important time.
Miller was gone for 11 at the end of the 10th over with the Zouks needing another 114 in the last 10 overs. Michael Hussey tried to take on the bowlers and perished just three overs later and Darren Sammy followed him the next ball back to the pavilion leaving the team reeling at 100/6 needing 74 more runs in the last 6 overs.
Wayne Parnell got another two wickets in the 17th overtaking the required run rate above 18 leaving the Zouks no chance of turning the game around.
Little cameos from everyone in the middle order helped the Zouks to get to a respectable total but their demise with the bat was a cause of concern in games to come. They were not able to orchestrate the chase properly and will be kicking themselves to have let the two points go.
The Trident will be happy to have moved into the top-3 thanks to a 25 run victory. N Pooran was awarded the man of the match for his superb innings of 81 leaving the Tridents just 3 points off the top of the points table in the CPL.
The Zouks, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the table but have 2-3 games in hand over their opponents on the table.
