Cricket Australia Appoint Ryan Harris and Matthew Elliott As High Performance Coaches
Former Australia players Ryan Harris and Matthew Elliott have been roped in by Cricket Australia (CA) as high-performance coach at the National Cricket Centre.
The duo, who beat competition from 40 applicants to bag the role, are contracted until 2020 and have been given the responsibility of developing Australia’s young prospects.
Harris, who represented Australia in 27 Tests between 2010-2015, is not new to coaching roles, having served as the assistant coach of the National Performance Squad in the A-team quadrangular series last year. He also served as the Under-19 Cricket Australia XI coach last season and was appointed as the bowling consultant of the Australian team during the South Africa tour last year.
On the other hand, Elliott, who played 21 Tests for Australia between 1996-2004, has been working as a batting consultant and youth coach with Cricket Victoria.
Expressing his delight over the appointments, Pat Howard, CA executive general manager, said: “Both have come through the Cricket Australia coaching pathway, being involved in underage national championships, and have a strong understanding of the challenges that lie ahead in developing Australian cricketers to be ready for first-class and international cricket.”
“Ryan and Matthew join what is already an experienced and highly credentialed coaching team at the National Cricket Centre, led by Troy Cooley, and both will be instrumental in guiding the young talent within our ranks,” he added.
Cooley also welcomed the duo and said they would play an integral role in mentoring the youngsters.
“Both will be heavily involved in mentoring our elite junior talent, with Matthew to be heavily involved particularly from a batting perspective, and Ryan to have a significant involvement in our pace bowling program,” he said.
Meanwhile, their first assignment will be to lead Australia’s Under-19s team in a home series against Sri Lanka in March. Harris has been given the responsibility of overseeing the bowling department while Elliot will take care of the batting department. After that, they will be involved in the National Performance Squad program and Cricket Australia XI youth squads.
