Ranjisinhji
Probably the most cricketing prince of them all, KS Ranjitsinhji’s name is immortalised in the form of Ranji Trophy, India’s premier domestic tournament. Ranji, it must be noted, never actually played first-class cricket in India. Ranjit made his debut against Australia in 1896, and is credited for inventing, or at least refining, the leg glance, which he played with deft wristwork-those wrists usually being encased in a billowing silk shirt. In personal life, there were some doubt about Ranjit’s claims to his princely throne, but he eventually succeeded as the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar in 1907. His nephew, KS Duleepsinhji, also represented England in Tests, while two other descendants-KS Indrajitsinhji and Ajay Jadeja played for India.
