Former Indian cricketer and former BJP MP and TV host Navjot once came under criminal proceedings after he murdered his close friend. The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday convicted Sidhu and his aide Rupinder Singh Sandhu for a 1988 road rage case in Patiala that resulted in the death of 50-year-old Gurnam Singh.
The court upheld appeals by Punjab government and a relative of the deceased to set aside the 1999 order of Patiala district and sessions court that had acquitted Sidhu and his aide in the December death 18 years ago when an incensed duo of Sidhu and Sandhu beat up Gurnam Singh following a brawl over a road incident.
Gurunam Singh had a heart attack almost immediately and died by the time he was taken to the hospital. The prosecution had argued that Gurnam Singh died from blows rained after an argument over the deceased’s attempt to overtake Sidhu’s car.
Apparently, Sidhu and Sandhu hit Singh after dragging him out of the car. The duo was convicted under Section 304(2) of IPC — culpable homicide was not amounting to murder that carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and has no minimum prescribed term.
However, later the Punjab court gave him bail.
