While India is still fighting with the deadly coronavirus virus, yet another natural calamity has hit the country. Cyclone Amphan has made landfall on Wednesday and caused severe destruction in the Indian states of West Bengal and Odisha. So far, 15 deaths have been reported whereas 5200 houses have been destroyed. Meanwhile, cricket fraternity has extended condolences to the families and prayed for the safety of people living there.

Kolkata, who was facing the most number of COVID-19 cases in the state, has been adversely affected by ferocious wind and torrential downpour. The city was under lockdown period as 3,103 people have been affected by the infection. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee said the devastation was “a bigger disaster than Covid-19”.

Area after area has been ruined. I have experienced a war-like situation today,” Ms Banerjee was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India.

Images of uprooted trees, lampposts and traffic lights, waterlogged streets, vehicles crushed under fallen trees and broken river jetties are being surfaced over the social media.

Moreover, Mobile networks are also not working in some areas, while some areas are facing power cuts.
