South African speedster Dale Steyn, who has been going through a rough phase with so many injuries is hoping to target a return to international cricket with an English County stint with Hampshire in June.
There is no doubt about the fact in his prime, Steyn is a devastating bowler and can make any batting line-up look clueless in pitches not conducive for fast bowling. The fast bowler had hardly played for South Africa in the last two years due to consistent injuries.
However, he told SuperSport Park on Sunday that he was nearing his full fitness after missing the Test series against Australia.
He sustained a heel injury during the 1st Test against India at the Newlands in Cape Town back in January.
“I could get through 12 or 15 overs, but that’s not enough to be competitive in a Test match,” he said.
The fast bowler is just two wickets short of going past Shaun Pollock to become South Africa’s highest wicket-taker in Tests. He would be likely to get a chance to get a hold on that record in the tour of Sri Lanka slated for July and August.
“The Proteas don’t play for quite a while,” said Steyn. “I’m going to take another month off. I’m not going to the IPL (Indian Premier League). I’m looking to go over to Hampshire in June to play a little bit of cricket, then Sri Lanka in July.”
Over the past many years, Steyn has emerged as one of the greatest fast bowlers in the history of the game.
Injuries had laid his career down in the last couple of years, but he is still a force to reckon with.
