Australia were simply ferocious in the first test at the Basin Reserve as they clinched victory by a mammoth margin of an innings and 52 runs. The visitors were dominant throughout the game and despite conditions not assisting them; the Kangaroos eventually easily won the game.
Australian coach Darren Lehmann admitted that he was really happy with the progress of his side. Lehmann also said that his side had put the memories of the dreadful 2015 Ashes campaign behind and were focused in the present. “You learn from your previous mistakes but you’ve got to remember we lost half the side from that Ashes series so they’ve got no scars,” Lehmann said. “We’re happy with our top six. I was really pleased with the way we batted at the Basin Reserve, grinding it out. “New Zealand, it’s very similar to England, I suppose.”
Speaking about the conditions in New Zealand, Lehmann added, “It had plenty of grass on it but it played better than it looked.” It didn’t do as much as we thought. “I thought it wasn’t a bad wicket to be fair. Maybe New Zealand let us in there with a couple of shots.”
Skipper Steve Smith too felt the same as he said, “There weren’t too many plays and misses and they nicked most of the balls,” Smith said. “A little bit like us at Edgbaston, I guess, or Trent Bridge. “It was nice to have one of those mornings. It was a pretty good toss to win.”
