Two-time T20 World Cup winning captain Darren Sammy has confirmed his signing for the Hong Kong T20 blitz, which makes him the third biggest deal for the tournament after veterans like Shahid Afridi and Kumar Sangakkara having already confirmed their participation in the tournament. Sammy will be joining Hung Hom JD Jaguars’ squad for the tournament.
Afzaal Haider, the coach of the team was elated by his signing and said: “Darren Sammy is a stalwart of the game. His celebrations with the pacifier and champion dances have won him countless fans across the globe. More than that, he is a very astute cricketer, who can contribute with the bat, ball and strategies.”
Max Abbott, the tournament director termed his signing as a big boost for the tournament, “It’s been a huge week for the tournament with Afridi, Sangakkara and now Darren Sammy signing on for the Blitz. Credit to the Jaguars for bringing such a popular player that is one of the most entertaining characters in world cricket. It’s going to be a huge boost for cricket in Hong Kong.”
The five-day tournament is set to kick off on March 8. The five teams participating in the tournament are HKI United, Kowloon Cantons and Hung Hom JD Jaguars, Galaxy Gladiators Lantau and City Kaitak. It’s not the first time when the event will be glorified with the presence of the star players as in past, players like Michael Clarke, Ryan Campbell and Jamie Atkinson have also marked their presence in the T20 league.
Kowloon Cantons are the current champions of the T20 tournament.
