Australia vs India 2020-21: David Warner ‘Highly Doubtful’ For Sydney Test

David Warner, Australian opener is still fighting to be match fit for the third Test against India in Sydney beginning January 7th but said Saturday it was “highly doubtful” he’d be 100 per cent if he did play the Test.

The explosive opener was named in the 18 member squad after he didn’t play first two Tests as he didn’t recover from a groin injury and has been badly missed as Australia’s top order struggled to build partnerships.

David Warner Is Highly Doubtful Whether He Will Be 100% Fit For Sydney Test

After rejoining team training, he said that he was confident in his batting abilities but was still uncertain he would be able to field like his former self in this current condition. But, he said, the final call would be made in the forthcoming days and he was preparing to be part of the side.

“We’ve got a training session today and tomorrow so I can’t give you any more indication of where I’m at,” David Warner told media. “Am I going to be 100 per cent? Highly doubtful.”

He will likely replace Joe Burns who was axed from the squad after struggling in the last two Tests and preceding warm up games keeping aside an unbeaten 50 in 2nd innings of 1st Test.

David Warner Said It’s Up to Selectors To Choose Between Matthew Wade And Will Pucovski For His Opening Partner

While debutant Will Pucovski is also expected to be fit after suffering a concussion in a warm-up game, David Warner said selectors will have final call on who would be his potential opening partner with Matthew Wade also in contention. Reflecting on Australia’s lack of partnerships in the top order in the 2 Tests so far, David Warner said Australia needed to play aggressive brand of cricket at the crease to tackle India’s bowling attack.

“If you have me and Wadey out there and we get a little bit of a sniff, the run-rate could be could be quite high, but at the end of the day it’s what the selectors go with.”

Australia won the opening Test in Adelaide by eight wickets, with India levelling the series on Tuesday with a similar eight-wicket win in Melbourne. Despite an outbreak of COVID-19 in Sydney, Cricket Australia has confirmed the third Test will be held at the SCG on January 7, with players  from both teams expected to arrive on Monday, 4th January.

The latest virus developments which emerged earlier this month, has forced authorities to put some part of Sydney in lockdown and place restrictions on travel to other states. But officials were still hopeful and confident the Test would go ahead as scheduled before the teams travel to Brisbane for the final Test beginning January 15.
