David Warner, the former vice-captain of Australia, will not be considered for captaincy post in future, Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday (March 28).
“Any consideration of future leadership would be conditional on acceptance by fans and the public, form and authority among the playing group. David Warner will not be considered for team leadership positions in the future,” a statement from CA read as.
Warner is considered to be the player who plotted the idea to tamper the ball, hence, CA has decided not to consider him for captaincy again.
Warner, along with Steven Smith, was banned for one year.
Cameron Bancroft, who tampered the ball, has been banned for nine months.
Both Smith and Bancroft will not be considered for captaincy post for two years.
Both Smith and Warner will also miss the coming season of IPL.
BCCI decided to drop these two players from the coming season of IPL.
Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad will be allowed to rope in replacements for these two players.
Australian players came under scanner on day three of the third Test against South Africa.
Bancroft was seen rubbing sandpaper on the ball, and his actions were seen suspicious by the umpires.
Post the completion of the day’s play; Smith accepted that it was the idea of the players to tamper with the ball to get undue advantage.
An investigation board was set-up which flew to South Africa to check the role of players in this saga.
As per the findings, only three players viz Smith, Warner, and Bancroft were found to be involved in it.
The investigation also cleared Darren Lehmann of having any role in the saga.
It is to be noted that he was seen passing the information to Handscomb. Still, he escaped any ban.
Australia have already appointed a new captain in the form of Tim Paine for the longes format of the game.
In limited-overs format, Cricket Australia is yet to announce the captain.
Australia are set to play England in June and before that, CA will name a new captain.
Aaron Finch seems to be an automatic choice for the job.
However, Smith is eligible to take captaincy back in all formats in 2020.
On his return to international cricket next year, he will have the challenge to deal with the pressure and sustain his place in the side.
During the ban period, the three players are eligible to play Grade level cricket in Australia and county cricket in England.
