Disgraced pair Steve Smith and David Warner might not be a part of Australia’s ODI team for the upcoming five-match series against Pakistan but will begin their reintegration into the Australian setup from this tour only. Smith and Warner’s 12-month ban is set to end on March 28 and they were eligible to play the final two ODIs in UAE, set to be played on March 29 and 31. However, Cricket Australia decided against naming the duo in the squad and instead asked them to play in the Indian Premier League.

According to Cricket Australia’s official website, the duo will link up with the ODI squad ahead of its five-match series which starts on March 22 in Sharjah.

Australia will leave for UAE after playing the fifth ODI against India on March 13. With the IPL starting on March 23, Smith and Warner will hardly have a week to spend with their national team.  Due to the restrictions of their bans, Smith and Warner have not been allowed to train with the Australian team. However, they have practiced with New South Wales and against the members of the Australian pace attack when preparing to play.

Both the players recently had surgeries on their elbows after suffering injuries in the Bangladesh Premier League. Warner, nonetheless, has shown he is in great form by smashing a century on his return for NSW Premier Cricket club Randwick-Petersham last week. Smith has also resumed his batting as he confirmed it with a video on his social media accounts.

It’s likely the pair will use their time in the UAE familiarising themselves with the new team environment under captain Aaron Finch and coach Justin Langer.

Warner and Smith are also bracing up for their return to the IPL. The BCCI had not allowed them to play in the last edition due to the ball-tampering scandal. However, both the players were retained by their respective franchises. Consequently, Warner will play for Sunrisers Hyderabad while Smith will ply his trade for Rajasthan Royals.
