The day India made history in 2013

The ICC Champions Trophy 2013 was nothing short of a dream run for the MS Dhoni led team India. India landed in England for the event as one of the favorites, and lived up to all expectations with an unparalleled display of sheer brilliance. The men in blue were just too good in the tournament as they were undefeated and displayed sheer dominance to lift the title.

On their way to the final against England at Birmingham, India defeated South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan in the group stage. After finishing first in their group, India’s game was set against Sri Lanka in the semi final and it turned out to be a one sided drubbing as India massacred the Sri Lankans at Cardiff. The final was played on the 23rd of June 2013 at Birmingham and rain had an impact.

With the game reduced to 20 overs a side, India could only get to 129. However, the Indian bowlers stepped up to the task as the hosts were restricted to 124. All rounder Ravindra Jadeja was named the Man of the Match for his priceless knock and 2 wickets.

After winning the title, skipper MS Dhoni showered his side with praises and said, “When we were batting I just said get close to 130. The shower helped us because the ball was gripping later on. It’s important to be positive. I said ‘we are the No. 1-ranked team, let’s play like that’. I knew the two-overs of Powerplay were crucial. I wanted to make them slog off the spinners. They all handled the pressure really well, in international cricket people talk about technique but it’s the ones that deal with the pressure.”
