The second day of the Cape Town Test between Australia and South Africa saw the visiting team completing the formalities by wrapping the innings up with a minor resistance from Kagiso Rabada and Dean Elgar.
Australia dismissed the Proteas after conceding 311, adding 55 to the overnight score. But not before Elgar creating a greater real estate for himself in the record books.
With his unbeaten knock of 141, which anchored the South African innings, Elgar equalled former West Indian opener Desmond Haynes in his tally for the most number of times he carried the bat for his side.
Elgar, in his career, carried his bat for the third time in his Test career. His gritty knock of 86* against India at Jo’Burg Test was the previous instance when he carried his bat through.
During the Durban Test between South Africa and England, it was Dean Elgar again who managed to carry his bat through. Interestingly, South Africa lost both the matches when Elgar carried his bat through.
Within a span of two and a half years, Elgar managed to achieve the feat thrice. In the era of 1986-93, Desmond Haynes carried his bat through thrice, twice against Pakistan and once against England.
Elgar scored a trademark knock of 118, full of grit against England. The South African opener surpasses an elite list of players who have carried their bats, twice in their career.
The likes of Len Hutton, Bill Lawry, Glen Turner and Bill Woodhill, managed to acquire the feat twice.
Here’s the record
Player | Number of times they carried their bats through |
Dean Elgar | 3 |
Desmond Haynes | 3 |
Len Hutton | 2 |
Bill Lawry | 2 |
Glen Turner | 2 |
Bill Woodhill | 2 |
Australia currently trails by 239 runs from the South African score with eight wickets in hand.
