IPL 2020: Deep Dasgupta And Ian Bishop Spoke On Wide Ball Controversy

Deep Dasgupta and Ian Bishop agree while discussing the Dubai incident of a wide ball as umpire Paul Reiffel revoked the decision of a second consecutive wide ball after looking at CSK skipper MS Dhoni behind stumps who was angry and vented his frustration by raising his hands which prompted the umpire to think otherwise.

Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni is known for his calm composure on-field. But in IPL 2019 MS Dhoni lost his calmness after Rajasthan Royals bowler Ben Stoke’s no-ball wasn’t eventually confirmed by the umpire. A batting team captain racing from dugout and charging at the umpire is not a common occurrence and is more than just showing dissent.

Deep Dasgupta: Umpire Paul Reiffel Changed His Mind

MS Dhoni once again displayed dissent at the on-field umpire during the Chennai Super Kings and SunRisers Hyderabad clash on 13th October. In this regard, former cricketers Deep Dasgupta and Ian Bishop have admitted to the fact that the umpire made a mistake in all probability.

During the 19th penultimate over of SRH’s chase, with 24 runs were required for SRH to win of 11 balls, Shardul Thakur bowled another full and wide delivery outside the off stump, after having bowled a wide delivery just on the preceding ball. Umpire Paul Reiffel was just about to signal a ‘wide’ until MS Dhoni prompted him to rethink.

“Paul Reiffel was going for that, for the wide, but then something happened and changed his mind. He was halfway there, he was almost there but then he changed his mind and what intrigued me was he got on a 2-way thing with the third umpire as well,” Deep Dasgupta said about the Dubai controversy.

“I don’t know whether intimidation is the right word here, I think it’s too strong a word. But you kind of have a second thought about it. His [umpire’s] initial reaction was a wide and we saw that since it was outside the tramline, we saw that and we did see the umpire change his mind. For whatever reason, MS Dhoni did change his mind,” Dasgupta added.

MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings, however, won the game by 20 runs, against David Warner’s SRH in Dubai even though the controversy as both Shardul Thakur and Dwayne Bravo bowled excellent last two overs conceding only five runs in the penultimate and 1onerun in the final 20th over.

Deep Dasgupta said that umpire was probably ‘intimidated’ by MS Dhoni, but he don’t know whether to use the strong word.

Ian Bishop: Paul Reiffel Made A Mistake As Wide Ball Should Have Been Called

Shardul Thakur conceded 5 runs in the 19th over, but in the third ball, the incident occurred. Paul Reiffel gave a wide on the previous delivery, but MS Dhoni’s shouting or movement behind the stumps prompted to reverse his decision.

“I’m someone who is very sympathetic to the umpires because I think it’s a difficult job but tonight I’m going to say that Paul Reiffel made a mistake. He looked up, it was a wide, it should’ve been called a wide. He looked up, saw Dhoni and changed his mind,” Bishop opined.

Karn Sharma leaked 19 runs in the 18th over as SRH were looking for a victory, but the last two overs changed the equation as SRH could score only six runs in the last two where they also lost two wickets.
