Deep Dasgupta Delighted At BCCI’s Decision To Appoint Rahul Dravid As Team India’s Head Coach

Deep Dasgupta expressed delight over the management’s decision to appoint Rahul Dravid as a coach.  The former India captain will replace outgoing coach Ravi Shastri at the helm and will take charge of the team, starting with the upcoming series at home against New Zealand.

With Virat Kohli stepping down from Team India’s T20I captaincy, Rohit Sharma will lead the side in the home series against New Zealand, and KL Rahul will serve as vice-captain.

Deep Dasgupta: It’s A Brilliant Move To Bring Rahul Dravid In As A Coach

Deep Dasgupta feels that Rahul Dravid is the right person to lead this pool of players forward as a majority have been groomed by him during their Under 19 and India A days.

While speaking on his YouTube channel, Deep Dasgupta said: “It is a brilliant move to bring Dravid in as coach. He has had a big line in establishing and developing the current pipeline of players. It is only natural that he works with the players he groomed while coaching India A and U-19. So, it is a very very good choice.”

Rahul Dravid coached and led the India U-19 side to great success in the U-19 World Cup. He would hope to translate the efforts into the senior team, who are struggling at the big stage for quite some time now.

He was recently appointed as the interim head coach for the Sri Lanka series, with Ravi Shastri busy with the Test team in England. The new coach has been offered a hefty contract and will be drawing a salary of Rs 10 crore.

The amount makes him one of the highest-paid Indian coaches. His first stint came in 2014 when he travelled to England as a batting consultant for the Test series. In July 2021, he returned as interim head coach for Sri Lankan limited-overs tour as Ravi Shastri-led coaching staff was in England for a Test series.

Deep Dasgupta: Bilateral T20I Series Will Decide Future Of Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Deep Dasgupta also spoke about the squad that was picked for the three-match T20I series, which will mark Rohit Sharma’s stint as full-time captain of the T20 team. He noted how this could potentially be a future deciding series for long-time seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Deep Dasgupta added: “The series against NZ will be a huge one, and a future deciding one for Bhuvneshwar with bowlers like Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, and Avesh Khan coming upto the first team now and pushing their case.”

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been a vital cog in the Indian seam attack in white-ball cricket since his debut in 2012. As of late, however, he has derailed over the years because of his quest for pace, injuries, and inconsistency.

He was dropped from the India team following their loss against Pakistan and was never recalled into playing XI for the rest of the tournament. The 16-member squad to face NZ includes veteran wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant, middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav, keeper Ishan Kishan, spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, and pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar. All these players were part of the T20 World Cup squad too.

Deepak Chahar, Shreyas Iyer, and Axar Patel, who were on the standby list for the tournament, were also included in the team to take on the Blackcaps. In addition, Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has been recalled to the side. In addition, CSK opening batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad (635 runs in IPL 2021) and all-rounder Harshal Patel (32 wickets in IPL 2021), who finished IPL 2021 as the highest run-getter and wicket-taker, respectively, have earned an India call-up.

Venkatesh Iyer, who was a revelation for Kolkata Knight Riders in the UAE leg of the recently concluded IPL 2021, also earned a maiden India call-up. Delhi Capitals (DC) bowler Avesh Khan was also included in the squad. He had picked up 24 wickets in IPL 2021 and was 2nd highest wicket-taker after Harshal Patel (32). Venkatesh Iyer scored 320 runs in 10 games at an average of 41.11 and a strike rate of 128.47, including four half-centuries.

India’s T20I squad against NZ: Rohit Sharma (captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wicketkeeper), Ishan Kishan (wicketkeeper), Venkatesh Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Axar Patel, Avesh Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Harshal Patel, Mohammed Siraj
