Deep Dasgupta, the former Indian wicket-keeper, pointed out that BCCI’s decision to announce KL Rahul as the vice-captain of the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence could have been kept on hold. India are scheduled to play four Tests, three ODIs, and three T20Is against Australia starting November 27.
BCCI announced the three squads on Monday 26th October. However, there was no room for Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma in all the concerned squads, as the board mentioned that they are currently monitoring the hamstring injury he sustained during the IPL along with Ishant Sharma who too was injured during IPL.
Deep Dasgupta: Rohit Sharma Will Be Part Of National Team If He Is Fit To Play For Mumbai Indians
The decision to exclude Rohit Sharma did not gone down well with fans and experts, especially with the MI skipper seen batting at the nets during MI’s training sessions. The fact that Mayank Agarwal who has also missed the past two games for Kings XI Punjab due to a similar type of injury was included in the squads for all three formats also became a hot debate. Mayank Agarwal has scored 398 runs in 10 matches averaging 39.8.
Former India wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta weighed in on the topic of team selection, saying it makes no sense to see Rohit Sharma sitting out from Australian tour if he plays the IPL in the forthcoming matches.
“Rohit still hasn’t played any game in a while now, but I guess if he is fit to play for the Mumbai Indians then he will be part of the national team. But what I know is that he is still 50:50, although he has just started to bat in the nets,” Dasgupta said in an interaction on Sports Today.
“I guess it is just a matter of time. As soon as he is fit to play a game or a few games, then he will be ready. It is a hamstring issue and you don’t want to include someone who is not 100 percent fit.”
Rohit Sharma scored 260 runs in nine matches averaging 28.88 so far before missing last two games and probably missing next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore too. The 33 year old Rohit Sharma has an average of over 45 in both Tests and ODIs.
Deep Dasgupta: Fit Rohit Sharma Has To Be Included If Fit
Deep Dasgupta also pointed out that BCCI selector’s decision to formerly announce KL Rahul as the vice-captain of the team in Rohit Sharma’s absence could have been kept on hold till more clarity was attained on Rohit Sharma’s fitness. He felt selectors could have delayed or not named the vice-captain.
“If Rohit is fit, he has to be there. There is no doubt about it. Maybe Mayank Agarwal’s injury is not as serious and therefore his name is included. But a fit Rohit Sharma has to be included in the team,” he said. “Maybe announcing the vice-captain could have been on hold. They could have waited for Rohit’s injury details for another week, and then gone ahead with it [declaring the vice-captain].”
KL Rahul is the leading run scorer in IPL 2020 with 595 runs in 12 matches averaging 59.5. KL Rahul returns to test fold and is named in all three squads for the three formats and will be vice captain in white ball Tests and ODIs.
