Delhi Hopeful Of Gautam Gambhir Leading Team In Ranji Trophy

Delhi cricket team management is now again looking towards Gautam Gambhir to take up the role of captain in the upcoming Ranji Trophy. The left-handed batsman was dropped as the captain of the side for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2016/17 as Rishab Pant was given the duty. to lead the team.

With selectors not yet confident of giving youngster the job to lead the team in days cricket, Gambhir is the only man in the team who can lead the team. Though Unmukt Chand is one of the candidates for the job but he was dropped from the side last season during Vijay Hazare Trophy due to form issues.

Though he made his comeback in the side for the last two games but again, the case of inexperience might come into play as well. Also, why would the management like someone else to lead the team in this format in Gambhir’s presence? Chand though has led Delhi in two of the Ranji Trophy games last season when Gambhir was called in the Indian Test side.

At present, Gambhir seems to be the only candidate for the job as even if the team management decides to go for Pant, there can be a case when he might miss few games for Delhi due to India A commitments as he might be selected in India A for limited over series against New Zealand A.

He is there in the side for two unofficial Tests matches and is expected to retain his place for limited over series as well.

The final decision regarding Delhi’s captaincy will be taken after meeting of team management, which includes Head Coach KP Bhaskar and newly appointed bowling coach, Manoj Prabhakar.

Delhi will open its Ranji Trophy campaign on from October 6 with the first game of the season against Assam to be played at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi.
