Dennis Lillee the reason behind Varun Aaron’s improved show
Against the Delhi Daredevils on Sunday, Varun Aaron looked like a menacing figure and bowled with all guns blazing. His hostile pace made the batsmen uncomfortable and he was rightly awarded the Man of the Match for the same. It was by far, his best performance in his IPL career. Aaron’s impeccable bowling was ably assisted by skipper Virat Kohli’s aggressive field setting.
But, what has been the reason behind such a turnaround for Varun Aaron? It has been none other than the great man, Dennis Lillee himself. This was admitted by Aaron himself, who even mentioned the disappointing phase he went through after being dropped from the World Cup squad.
This is what the pacer said, “I went to Australia and I had a stint with Dennis Lillee for a week and that really helped me a lot. I was disappointed not make it to the World Cup and I had time in my hands. So before the Irani Trophy, I had gone over there (to Australia) and then I immediately picked up six wickets on return. The areas that he helped me on were just basic stuff; he helped me with the technique and that just helped me be more accurate. We worked on my bowling action.”
The 25-year old seamer from Jharkhand also mentioned that working with the legendary South African Alan Donald was an unforgettable experience and really helpful for him.
Aaron however, credited the presence of Mitchell Starc, the number one ODI bowler to be a booster for the side. “Having Mitch in the team is an asset for any team,” Aaron said. “He is a great bowler and a good team man as well. He gets that wicket upfront which makes it easier because the opposition goes on the back-foot right there. It is good fun playing with Mitch. We just wanted to bowl hard lengths in the beginning and luckily the wicket was doing a little bit and that just worked for us,” he said. “Bounce in the wicket always helps, especially when it goes through well with good bounce. This wicket was really pleasing to bowl on after bowling in Bangalore for the past two matches.”
Starc’s presence has surely done wonders to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Indian fans would be hoping for another improved show by their pace sensation Varun Aaron.
