Deodhar Trophy 2014, 1st Semi-Final: Manoj Tiwary stares East Zone to final; Yuvraj flops
Riding on the gritty innings of Manoj Tiwary, East Zone defeated North Zone by 52 runs in the first semi-final to enter the finals of the Deodhar Trophy.
After being set a target of 274 runs by East Zone, North Zone lost Manan Vohra and Unmukt Chand in quick succession in a slow start. Yuvraj Singh failed again as he scored only four runs before nicking behind to the bowling of Biplab Samantray. Mandeep Singh and Gurkeerat Singh Mann tried to stabilize the innings before Mandeep Singh fell to Saurasish Lahiri for 40. Then Gurkeerat Singh Mann got the much needed support of Rishi Dhawan as they put on 71 runs for the 7th wicket before Gurkeerat also lost his wicket to Biplab Samantray. He top scored with 83 runs. As he got out, North Zone lost their tail quickly and they got bundled out for 221 runs. Saurasish Lahiri was the most successful of the East Zone bowlers as he picked up 3 wickets in his full-quota of 10 overs.
Earlier after losing the toss, East Zone also lost two quick wickets before Manoj Tiwary made light work of North Zone bowlers. He looked at his best during his innings of 151 off 121 balls as he hit 15 fours and 4 sixes. Except Shreevats Goswami, no one was able to support Manoj Tiwary from the other end, but this didn’t affect him and he carried the East Zone innings on his shoulders. Sandeep Sharma was the pick of the North Zone bowlers as he picked up 3 wickets giving away 49 runs in his full-quota of 10 overs. With the kind of form Manoj Tiwary is in, it looks like he’ll get called up to the Indian team soon.
The second semi-final of the Deodhar Trophy between South Zone and West Zone will take place on 1st December at Wankhede Stadium and the final will be played at the same venue on 3rd December.
