Under his captaincy, Sri Lanka went onto the finals of 2011 World Cup. The Southpaw himself was in prolific form, scoring 465 runs in 9 matches and finishing as the third-highest run-scorer after Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sachin Tendulkar. Yet, Sanga becomes one of the grand cricketers who was so close yet so far of winning the World Cup.

The one achievement lacking in an exemplary copybook was that he never won it all but he was too young for Sri Lanka’s 1996 title and lost in the 2007 and 2011 finals – even if he did average more than 50 across the two show-piece appearances.
