KL Rahul was finally getting his due after performing consistently with the willow. With regular openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay going great guns, the Karnataka opener was getting very limited chance to prove himself. However, those chances were enough for him to prove his worth. In the very first series he played, he scored a century in the challenging conditions of Australia but that was not enough for him to get a regular place in the team. He followed it with another ton in Sri Lanka.
He followed it with a brilliant batting display in the IPL 2016 and another brilliant outing in Zimbabwe saw him getting selected in the Indian squad for the West Indies tour. After being ignored for the first Test, he got a chance in the second match when Murali Vijay was injured and the opener grabbed the chance with both hands. The right-handed batsman scored a brilliant 158 to pile more pressure on Shikhar Dhawan who was struggling to get runs. Another half century in the next match followed by a century in the T20 series against the same opposition compelled the selectors to pick him in the squad for New Zealand series.
The batsman was finally rewarded for his good performance. Playing his first match at home, he got the starts but could not convert them into big scores. However, he showed a lot of promise and just when he was looking to cement his place in the playing eleven, he injured his leg while trying to reverse sweep Mark Craig in the second innings of the first Test. At first, it looked nothing serious as he continued to bat but now he has been ruled out of the series. Gautam Gambhir, who last played for India in 2013, has been recalled as his replacement.
As expected, the 24-year old was very disappointed with the unfortunate turn of event and took to Twitter to express his feelings. However, the latest setback has not hampered his spirit as he said that the comeback from the injury will be sweeter.
