Dinesh Karthik Should Bat at No 4 Till He is Performing: Sourav Ganguly

After losing the opening ODI at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, Team India bounced back strongly in the 2nd ODI against New Zealand at Pune to level the three-match series 1-1. Riding on a sensational bowling performance by Bhuvneshwar Kumar who returned with 3/45 India were able to restrict New Zealand to 230. In the batting department, it was Shikhar Dhawan and Dinesh Karthik who struck fine half-centuries to ensure India won the must-win encounter by six wickets and with four overs to spare.

Dhawan was dismissed for 68, but Dinesh Karthik remained unbeaten on 64 to ensure a comfortable win for the hosts. Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly lauded Karthik for his good innings and said that he should be allowed to bat at No.4 as long as he is scoring runs.

“He played well to be honest, although there was not much pressure when you’re chasing that kind of a total,” he said.

“He will be tested but he should play as long as he is performing. But he should be allowed to play at No. 4 as long as he is scoring the runs,” he further added.

Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh who rose to prominence during the tenure of Sourav Ganguly as India’s skipper also echoed the same views of Ganguly and said this would give Karthik more confidence which will help him perform better in the future.

“Happy to see Dinesh Karthik batting at No. 4. He is one of those guys who has the correct technique to bat at No. 4. Good to see him getting those runs and I’m sure these will boost his confidence and also Virat Kohli. I’m sure you will see better performances in the future,” he added.

Ganguly also stated the fact that India are the clear favourites to seal the series but nothing can be predicted in cricket. He added that it is a very difficult task to beat India in their home conditions.

“Don’t predict in cricket. But India are favourites to win the series. It’s is very hard to beat India in India and I think Virat Kohli’s side will keep the record intact,” he said. The deciding encounter of the series will be played at the Green Park in Kanpur tomorrow.
