The BCCI has named veteran Indian domestic stalwart Amol Muzumdar as the senior women’s team’s new head coach. The Mumbai cricketer served as the head coach of the Mumbai Ranji team until the 2022–2023 domestic season and also had vast experience in coaching the South African national side and the Rajasthan Royals of the Indian Premier League.
Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra, and Jatin Paranjape, members of the Cricket Advisory Committee, interviewed potential candidates before finalizing Muzumdar as the head coach of the team. Despite never having the opportunity to play for his country, the right-hand batter had an outstanding domestic career, amassing 11,167 runs in 171 games.
Amol Muzumdar has expressed his satisfaction at being named the new head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team and stated that the next two years will be crucial because the women’s squad will be competing in two World Cups.
“I am deeply honoured and privileged to be appointed as the Head Coach of the Indian Women’s Cricket Team. I thank the CAC and the BCCI for placing their trust in me and believing in my vision and the roadmap for Team India. This is a huge responsibility and I look forward to working closely with talented players and providing them with the right preparation and guidance to excel”.
“The next two years are extremely important as two World Cups are scheduled in the period. Together with the coaching and support staff, we will look to tick every box and give ourselves the best chance to succeed,” Amol Muzumdar said.
Muzumdar is given the opportunity with an eye on two ICC events – the T20 World Cup in Bangladesh in 2024 and the 50-over World Cup in India in 2025. It would be interesting to see how his deep knowledge of the game and expertise can impact and mould women’s cricket in India in the future.
After ending his 21-year first-class career, in which he rose to become one of the Ranji Trophy’s top run scorers, Muzumdar has been a working coach. Following his retirement, he led Mumbai, served as an IPL coach for the Rajasthan Royals, taught age-group teams at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy, and led South Africa for their 2019 tour of India.
