Team India was forced to cancel their training session scheduled for today due to persistent rains. Visitors Australia, however, did not waste any time and used the indoor facility of the stadium.
“Since it’s raining and the facilities are covered, they won’t go to the stadium today,” read an official communication from Team India.
The weather at present in Kolkata is cold and wet, and the pitch has been kept under cover for most of the time including the last weekend.
So far, the rains have shown no mercy. It poured heavily on Monday afternoon and for the most of Tuesday. To make matters worse, MET department has predicted rain on the match day as well.
“Today’s condition is because of a low-pressure formation which is situated at northwest Bay of Bengal and its neighboring areas. Also, there’s the axis of monsoon trough causing rainfall,” IMD Kolkata director Ganesh Das told PTI.
Steve Smith and Co had to quickly change their plans after the saw a covered Eden Gardens today morning. The batsmen hit the indoor facilities, while bowlers went back to the team hotel.
“Doubt we will be out on the ground today,” posted Aussie vice-captain David Warner on his official social network handle with a photo of Eden Gardens under the cover.
The Eden Garden ground staff is facing a tough time dealing with the inclement weather conditions. The curator has asserted that while they do have the best equipment, without sunshine, it would be tough to ensure proper playing conditions.
“We need at least two hours of sunshine to get the ground ready. We are well-equipped, we are keeping our fingers crossed. The good thing is we still have two days,” East Zone curator Ashish Bhowmick told PTI.
