Duleep Trophy: I Did Not Expect a Hundred When we Were Nine Down – Baba Indrajith

When India Red was reeling on a score of 205/9, Baba Indrajith had no thoughts of touching the mark of 200. He was batting with the last batsman in the batting order, and India Blue bowlers were making merry out of the favourable conditions.

However, what followed was a success story for Indrajith, as the Tamil Nadu batsman, playing his first Duleep Trophy game, went onto score a double century, sharing a record partnership of 178 with Vijay Gohil,

“This is a very, very special inning for me. I did not expect to score a hundred after we were nine down. To reach a double-hundred from there is very special. Vijay Gohil defended tightly and I found a rhythm. Without his support and partnership, it would not have been possible,” Indrajith told ESPNcricinfo.

“I later took calculated risks when the ball was in my area. I hit out against the spinners and targeted some medium-pacers. I told Vijay ‘I will face the first three balls of the over and then try to turn the strike and give it to you’. I asked him to push for two and run hard whenever he found the gap in the outfield and dealt with the situation. He also showed good application, defended tightly, and left balls outside off,” he added.

After completed the double ton, it was Indrajith who got dismissed, and Gohil stayed there not out for 34. Ironically, it was Manoj Tiwary who got the wicket of Indrajith, and with that, India Red’s innings came to an end with a score of 383.

India Blue started off well, as riding on an innings of 86* from Hanuma Vihari, they are comfortably sitting at a score of 216 with three wickets down, trailing by 167 runs. The first motive will be to gain the first innings lead to ensure some points from the game, whereas, if the India Red bowlers are able to get few early wickets, then they would move a step forward to qualifying for the finals of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Suresh Raina also found some form as the comeback man played an innings of 52, which included seven fours. He enjoyed his time at the crease and was the main force during his partnership with Vihari.

Raina would hope his batsmen to get past India Red’s to be in a comfortable position.
