ToggleDavid Warner, the legendary Australian opener’s future in the game’s longest format has been under cloud for some time now. And when the Southpaw struggled to gel during the first three Tests of the Ashes 2023 series against England, concerns over his place in the team doubled.
Warner opened the batting for Australia in the first three Ashes Tests alongside Usman Khawaja, but he has recently looked like a weak imitation of his former self. He has scored 141 runs in three Tests, including one fifty, and in the third Test, Stuart Broad removed him for the 17th time in Test history.
He could only muster 4 and 1 runs in the third Test match against Australia’s two innings at Headingley in the match in which his team lost by 3 wickets. However, Australia still leads the five-Test series 2-1.
Australia’s captain Pat Cummins declined to guarantee Warner’s spot in the team after the third Test in Leeds. Cameron Green’s likely return for the Manchester Test was even acknowledged by Cummins in the post-game news conference.
“You keep all options open. We’ve got nine or 10 days now, so we’ll take a deep breath. We’ll go away for a few days,” Cummins said.
‘End Of An Era’- Candice Warner Shares Photo On Instagram With David Warner And Kids
Following the conclusion of the Leeds Test, Warner’s wife Candice shared an enigmatic statement on Instagram, suggesting that her husband’s time playing the longest version of the game may have already ended.
Following Australia’s three-wicket defeat in the third Ashes Test, Warner’s spouse Candice posted a family picture on Instagram with caption: “The end of an era for us touring with Test cricket, it’s been fun. Forever your biggest supporters and your girl gang. Love you, David Warner.”
Warner’s opportunity to keep his spot at the top of the batting order is in jeopardy even though the Australian selection panel has not yet finalized the squad for the last two Ashes Tests.
This may also be the case because, prior to last month’s WTC 2023 championship match versus India, David Warner had announced that his final appearance for Australia in white will come in the Sydney Test against Pakistan in 2024 on Australian soil.
Warner likely will not have his ideal farewell at home, though, given his seemingly poor play in the ongoing Ashes 2023.
