More than the results, England have been focussing on building a team for next year’s T20 World Cup and the Three Lions are expected to continue their experiments, even at the cost of the series. The visitors are trailing 1-2 but are expected to continue to give chances to youngsters. In the 3rd T20I, England rested Jonny Bairstow and Chris Jordan, handing debuts to Tom Banton and Matt Parkinson.
Batting first, the home team put up 180/7 on the board. Once again, Colin Munro failed to provide a good start to the team but the contribution from Martin Guptill (33 of 17), Colin de Grandhomme (55 off 35) and others meant Kiwis put up a defendable total on the board.
England found themselves in the reach of the target with Dawid Malan (55 off 34) and James Vince (49 off 39) putting up 63 runs for the second wicket in 7.3 overs but a failure from middle-order saw them fall short.
After Eoin Morgan’s dismissal in 15h over, they were 139/3 and the visitors lost their next four wickets for 27 runs, falling short by 14 runs. With the win, New Zealand have made comeback in the series and lead by 2-1.
In the only T20I here, team bowling first won – New Zealand chased down 142 against Bangladesh in January 2017. Chasing the target should be an easy task here and hence, team winning the toss will likely bowl first.
Injury update and availability –
Despite disappointing performances from Colin Munro, New Zealand are expected to give him another chance as the home side is leading in the series. There will be another change in the playing XI as Lockie Ferguson will be replaced by Colin Munro for the last two T20Is.
