ENG vs WI 2017: West Indies Seeks Motivation from win Against Pakistan at Jamaica

Low on confidence after being thrashed inside three days in the series-opener at Edgbaston, West Indies coach Stuart Law has said his team is seeking motivation from the win against Pakistan in Barbados earlier this year which came under similar circumstances.

Jason Holder & Co. had suffered a heavy seven-wicket defeat in Jamaica against Pakistan after losing nine wickets for just 80 runs in the second innings, as they could set a paltry target of 32 runs. However, the hosts had bounced back from the thrashing in style, as they registered an impressive 106-run win and bowling Pakistan out for 86 in the fourth innings of the following Test at Barbados.

They are going through a similar situation right now. After conceding 514 runs in the first innings in the day-night Test, the visitors could barely provide any resistance against the England bowlers, as they were folded up for 168 and 137 to suffer a heavy defeat by an innings and 209 runs. Barring the two early wickets on day one when Kemar Roach sent back debutant Mark Stoneman and Tom Westley cheaply, the Caribbean outfit proved no match for their formidable opponents, as they lost nineteen wickets inside a day to lose the match on the third day.

“We sat down, and we talked about our Test series against Pakistan,” Law said. “We got beaten in two-and-a-half days in Jamaica and came back and won the second Test. We played the same team, they played the same team, and our boys stood up. Now we have had a look and seen what England are trying to do to us; we will have better knowledge going into it. We know what is coming, it is a matter of us finding a way to cope with it.

The defeat at Edgbaston, nevertheless, attracted widespread criticism for West Indies with former bowler Curtly Ambrose leading the charge.

The bowling legend, while writing a column for the Daily Mail, called the performance “embarrassing” and “painful to watch”. Hurt by Ambrose’s comments Law said:

“That is disappointing. Curtly not long ago was a coach with this team, so it is disappointing that criticism comes.

But at the same time, Law admitted that the team needs to perform to stop the criticism.

“We have to understand why it is there. We are not performing as well as we want. It would have been nice if he had come into the dressing room to talk to the guys and express his displeasure to us. That would have been awesome, but that didn’t happen. What can we do? We have to get our noses down, our backsides up and play better,” he said.

“We did not play well. We have been very honest with our assessment. A lot of guys have been asked to look at themselves in the mirror by the captain. We have been very open and forthcoming with thoughts on how they can get better. We are giving them every ounce of support. These guys have got a lot of talent. They just need a bit of experience. Once they get that they will be pretty good,” he added.

Law further said that the inexperienced Windies dressing room is positive and insisted on ‘blanking out’ the criticism and move forward.

“In a dressing room we are very positive,” said Law. “I believe in these young men. They have got high skills. It is just the experience of learning how to play in a very tough environment. That is where we need to improve very quickly, but that is going to take time. The criticism will come. I understand that. We can’t do much about it. We have just to blank it out, move forward and once we start putting things right on the field that criticism means nothing to us.”

The former Australia player also confirmed that fast bowler Gabriel and leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo are available for selection. The second Test will be played at Leeds from Friday (August 25).
