ENG vs WI 2nd Test: Ben Stokes Reprimanded For Breaching ICC Code Of Conduct

England star Ben Stokes has received an official reprimand by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for a Level 1 breach of its Code of Conduct on the second day of the ongoing Test against West Indies at Headingley. The all-rounder was charged for “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match”, the ICC confirmed on Sunday (August 27).

“Stokes was found to have breached Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match”,” the ICC stated in its release.

In addition to the reprimand for his breach of Article 2.1.4, one demerit point has been added to Stokes’s disciplinary record,” it added.

Stokes, who scored a century in the first innings, entered the match with two demerit points against his name and is now just one demerit point shy of suffering a suspension. If he accumulates one or more demerit points within a 24-month period, then they will be converted into suspension points which will result in a ban.

The incident took place in the 101st over of West Indies’ first innings, when the England international reacted furiously after Shai Hope edged his delivery for a four. Furious after conceding the boundary, the 26-year reacted angrily and made an inappropriate comment which was clearly audible on the stump mic as well as heard by the on-field match officials.

Stokes admitted the offense at the end of day’s play and accepted the sanction proposed by Match Referee David Boon. Consequently, there will be no formal hearing for the charge leveled by on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and S. Ravi, third umpire Marais Erasmus, and fourth umpire Nick Cook.
