England Duo Likely to Set Big Bash League on Fire
England’s Joe Root and Jos Buttler are likely to participate in Australia’s KFC Big Bash this summer. The England Test skipper Root has been in fine form and had scored a hundred against India in the ongoing ODI series. Buttler, on the other hand, had a fruitful IPL season with Rajasthan Royals.
The wicket-keeper batsman’s heroics earned him a place in the English side. It will be Root’s first stint in BBL.
He had gone unsold in the IPL auction earlier this year. The duo will reportedly play for Sydney Thunders. The franchise have two international slots up for grabs.
Buttler and Mitchell McLeneghan represented them last season, but the unit is yet to confirm the signings this season.
Buttler hit two quick-fix fifties for Thunders last season. He had earlier played for Renegades in 2013-14.
Root had earlier raised concerns over the lack of T20 exposure due to the packed international calendar. Since the World T20 in 2016, the right-hand batsman took part in just 11 T20 games. This season though, he is likely to play a lot of them.
Root on performing in T20
“Until there’s a really good block for me to go and play T20 cricket somewhere in a domestic tournament, it’s going to be hard to get a string of games to put that case (that he deserves a place in the T20 team) across,” he said.
England’s tour to Sri Lanka ends in late November, and the fixtures against the Windies are yet to get finalized. However, Root backs himself in the shortest format of the game.
“I’m fully confident in the ability I have in that format. I can perform in T20 cricket. I don’t see it as a closed door for me, but I have to make sure, in the limited opportunities I have, to keep performing. I fully understood the decision, that’s part of having a really strong squad. You never like it as a player, but having been captain myself I know how hard it can be.” he said.
