England to host West Indies in a pink-ball fixture
The England cricket team is set to play a pink-ball Test match against West Indies at Edgbaston next summer when the islander’s tour’s the country. By doing so, the England team will become the fifth country to play a pink-ball Test match, New Zealand, Australia being the other two. West Indies and Pakistan will enter this list as soon as they kick off their first Test match of the series at U.A.E. which starts from October 13. It will be the first time when England will play with pink ball whereas it will the second experience for the visitors.
“We’re excited by the prospect of staging our first ever day-night Test Match. It’s a great opportunity to attract more fans to the game and see how staging Test cricket in the afternoon and evening fits with working patterns and modern lifestyles, whilst maintaining the deep tradition of Test match cricket.
“We think it can help attract different fans and families to Test cricket. A number of Test nations are looking at day-night Tests as a way of building further interest in our most traditional format. We’re glad to be supporting that and adding to the understanding of how this might develop in different countries.” Tom Harrison, Chief Executive of the ECB said,
The England cricket Board has released the schedule and preliminary playing timetable for the pink-ball Test.
According to the schedule, the West Indies will land in the country in last week of July, more than half a month prior to the start of the international fixtures. They will play two practice games to assimilate with the conditions in England. The first of the three Test matches will start from August 17 which will be played with the pink ball. 2 more Test matches, a lone T20I and five ODI’s will follow the Test series.
The playing hours for the pink ball Test will be 2:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. The first session will be played from 2-4 P.M. making way for Tea session. The play will resume at 4:20 P.M. before players take the final break at 6:20 P.M. to have dinner. The last session will consume the rest of the time. It will only be the last session that will be played under lights.
West Indies last toured England in the year 2012 to play 3 Test match series followed by 3 one-day’s and lone T0I. The visitors lost the Test series by a margin of 0-2, an ODI series defeat by the same margin followed before they lost the final game of the series i.e. T20 as well.
It should be noted that West Indies has not qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy to be played next year in England.
